Food Review: Medzs @ Orchard Central

Bf and I have been exploring different restaurants recently because we realized that we have been dining at the same few favourite restaurants most of the time. It's time to try something new! After trying out at Marché, we liked their dining concept and decided to go for something similar

Medzs - A Casual Dining Mediterranean Restaurant

There was a promotion when we visited the place (Not sure if it's still ongoing).
20% off the bill for minimum spent of $60
(Limited to some debit/credit card only)

I thought that was a pretty good deal so we did not mind splurging a little more than usual that day.

Medzs Happy Hour 5pm - 8pm

Upon entering the restaurant, we were each given a Medzs electronic card to order our food. Simply pass this card to the staff at each food counter and the value will be stored inside. Payment can then be made at the end of your meal when you're exiting the place. I find this concept quite interesting and convenient as we wouldn't have to hold cash and walk around. I also prefer to walk around and order our food as I consider it a form of enjoyment (Like buffets.. Just that you have to pay as of ala-carte)

Freshly Squeezed Juices and Smoothies($7.50 and up)

I personally feel that $7.80 for a cup of freshly squeezed juice is quite costly as I can easily get a cheaper alternative. But looking at the various combinations with the word "Detoxifying" on the board, I gave in. Well, I was also especially thirsty that evening. Not very sure if the "detox" part works.. Haha.

We tried Green Triplets and Tropical Paradise. Guava, apple, lemon juice are always my top favourites and I wasn't very comfortable with trying Celery, ginger and beetroot. Now that the Smoothies choices got my attention, I am very tempted to have the Banana smoothie.

Either the place was really spoilt for choices or I was having a very bad indecisiveness that day because I had such a hard time deciding what to have for dinner. About half the time, I didn't know what and how the food look like. I even had to google to see how it looked like before making my order. That's probably because I hardly or never even tried some of the cuisines before.

There is a wide array of different cuisines such as Greece, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, French to choose from. I was tempted to settle for Italian pasta but that sounds quite common so I dropped the idea.

After ordering our food, we were given a device which would beep and vibrate when your food is ready, and you can proceed to collect at the respective food counters. I guess this is also the reason why there isn't any service charge (Only GST).

Wild Mushroom Soup ($6.50)

It wasn't very fantastic as we found it lacking of richness. I also prefer to have some mushroom bits inside the soup for extra texture.

Potato Rosti with Sour Cream ($5.90)

There are other toppings available - Parma ham, roasted beef, salmon, chicken, cheddar cheese, etc. But we decided to stick to the sour cream one as it's the cheapest option. Compared to Marche, this was a disappointment. At Marche, the first bite and even subsequent bites wowed me. But unfortunately, I couldn't feel the same way towards this dish. It was excessively oily in and out, and I actually felt disgusted after having less than half of it.

Doesn't look very appetizing in the photo either.. I felt like the rosti was in a pool of oil and it was a turn off.

Chicken Paella ($15.90)

As I wanted to stay out of my comfort zone, I tried something different, of which was acceptable to me (After googling for the dish). The paella was quite palatable to me, with strong and rich flavours. The chicken was also quite tender and easy to chew on.

Chicken & Bacon Skewer ($7.90)

I'm not a fan of Bacon, but bf is. He couldn't stop praising this dish and exclaiming that the chicken and bacon goes so well together. I personally feel that the price of $7.90 for a skewer is not very worth it. But if one is really enjoying the dish greatly, then why not?

Tiramisu

Even though I had so much food already, there is always room for dessert! I loved the different layers of the creamy texture with some bittersweet taste in it. Only problem I had was that I kept choking on the powder. Goshhhh.

Overall Experience at Medzs

The quality is acceptable, but not too much to rave about. I would probably visit the place again just to try out other cuisines. I wouldn't really complain about the quality as I am more interested in trying out something new. I like their dining concept, and with "no service charge" = ordering even more food at the same price! The 20% promotion with every $60 spent also gave us additional savings and we felt that the dinner was quite sumptuous given the amount that we spent. If you are interested in Mediterranean food and isn't too particular about the standard, you can give Medzs a try!

[AD] Glisten Jewel

Sponsored Advertorial:

Today I'll be featuring some really affordable and trendy accessories from Glisten Jewel!

www.glistenjewel.com

Although this is a sponsored ad, I have previously purchased two accessories myself. Glisten Jewel is known for its true affordability and "everyone deserves to be a princess" without splurging more than what is needed!

I was kindly sponsored 2 accessories of my own choice! Given its wide range of designs, I took some time to decide what type of style I want to go for and here's my top 2 pick!

BLACK X GOLD

Black Triangle Statement Necklace
$5.50

Black with gold will never ever go wrong. Black itself is already my favourite colour when it comes to accessories and outfits, but with gold, it just spices up the whole outfit and adds glam to it.

You can wear it with a leather jacket to rock the edgy style, or go for something more elegant by pairing it with a black maxi dress.
Basically, such a versatile statement piece will always go perfect with almost anything. Of course, you can play around with different colours.

Though I already have a few necklaces similar to this, I am still really attracted to the simplicity of the design.

Classy Rope Bracelet (Available in white too)
$8.00

When I was browsing through the collections, this instantly caught my eye and I told myself that I'm totally keeping this piece! It is a perfect addition to my black triangle statement necklace. I really love its simplicity. It's not hard to pull off the stylish look with the combination of these two colours.

While the colours are simple, wearing this one only bracelet would not be boring as the golden chains adds dimension to your wrist like arm candies. Perhaps you can pair it with a simple watch and you're good to go!

Ranging from necklaces, rings, shades, bracelets, earrings, to hair accessories, items from Glisten Jewel cost from $3.90 to $16 of which many nice ones are just priced at $5-7
It's really affordable compared to many other retail stores!

Glisten Jewel also launches every other Sunday and their new collection this week features the Hollywood Glam

If you're just too lazy to browse through the entire collection, just head over to "WHAT'S YOUR STYLE", you can choose your favourite style - currently they have tribal, lace and kawaii. The page actually recommends the accessories according to the style that you have chosen! This makes shopping a lot more convenient when you are indecisive (Just like me!)

Hai Di Lao Hotpot 海底捞火锅

Many have been raving online about the excellent food quality and service at Hai Di Lao Hot Pot. Hai Di Lao serves more than just delicious food to happy customers, their service is almost exceptional and unique compared to other places (In a good way, duh) But with ridiculously outstanding customer service, one should expect to get a ridiculously long waiting time as well. Even so, there are still many who are willing to go through that long wait.

Reservations are recommended, or you can expect the waiting time to go up to 2-3 hours on weekends and during peak hours. If the queue is really too long, distract yourself with some free snacks provided at the counter. My brother took some popcorn and it's really not bad for a free snack!

And which other restaurant would offer FREE manicure service to customers? There is also a children's play corner for young kids.

The waitress provided us with a hot towel, an apron to wear and even plastic bags to protect our phones. Talk about awesome service!

There are roughly about 20 different sauces and condiments - Some unique ones include Beef sauce, Korean style chilli sauce, mushroom sauce. I just kept mixing different ones to try! Have to make the $4 charges worth it. With $4, you get unlimited sauces and free flow of fruits and dessert. However, the choices of desserts are quite limited since it is not really a buffet.

Soup bases - Seafood and mushroom soup hotpot (Double flavour)

There are other popular soup bases such as Sichuan spicy hotpot and tomato soup. Would love to try the spicy one if I visit this place again!

You can easily order your food from the restaurant's iPad and half portions are also available for some of the food items. I think this is good for those who are either light eaters or when there are only two diners.

Wagyu Beef

If I'm not wrong, this plate itself already cost like $50+. That's around $7~ per piece and even though the beef is so nicely marbled and tasted so heavenly, and even though I'm not the one paying for it, I could felt the ache by just placing it in my mouth. If you're ordering this, be careful not to overcook the beef, having it 'medium rare' would probably be just nice as the tenderness of the beef would be perfect. (I accidentally slightly overcooked one piece and the difference of the texture is quite huge)

Black Angus Beef

Price is definitely not as steep, and if you're not the type who wants to splurge on top-notch quality, these are still worth the try! Quality wise is still up to great standard. The only downside is the not-so-soft and instant-melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Beef (I forgot the exact name)

P.S. I was busy enjoying the food such that I have forgotten about marking down the names and prices of the food!!

Not bad for a try! My dad personally love eating this. But I find it quite troublesome to chew on something with bones. The texture is also not as soft and tender like the sliced ones. The meat is a little on the chunky side.

Black Pork

Just like Wagyu beef, Black pork is also among the premium standard of all pork. The texture of the black pork compared to the normal quality is less tough and dry. Worth the try as well.

Soon Hock Fish

The fish is really fresh and tasty. But remember not to overcook it or else it would defeat the natural freshness and mouthfeel of it.

The meat and fish are quite satisfying to begin with. But I wouldn't quite give the same ratings for the meatballs and vegetables. I feel that they are really overpriced. Fishballs, sausages, luncheon meat and some of the greens cost like $6~. The price for such dishes are not very worth it in my opinion. Maybe a few dishes to complete the meal is fine, but I would honestly rather splurge on another round of meaty feast than to spend a few more dollars on something that is of a really low cost.

Beef Balls

Beech Mushrooms

Assorted Vege and fishcakes

Fishballs

House Made Kungfu Noodle

We were entertained with a noodle dance that looks quite interesting. Noodle quality is not really that fantastic but the performance is surely worth watching at least once for a first-time visit. Or you can just check it out from tables around you if you are curious but not interested to taste it.

They provided us with this stand to hang our utensils while cooking the meat.

Anyway, for the FOC desserts at the counter, we had MANY bowls of sweet tofu pudding. It was so silky smooth and sweet. Within a few gulps, we finished 1 bowl, and another, and another. My bro stacked up his bowls and this is the amount that he have eaten. I think I had my fair share of around 4-5 bowls.

Hai Di Lao is definitely a restaurant that has exceptional awesome customer service that makes us satisfied not only on our stomach but our heart as well. The portion served was substantial and delicious but I would not recommend ordering much of the vege and assorted meatballs as you can get those at any other hotpot restaurants at a much lower price. I believe many patronise Hai Di Lao not only for its food quality but to be pampered by their great service. I wouldn't deny that the food and ambience is a great place for dining, but for the hefty price that comes along with it, I would rather go for alternative restaurants that serve decent quality food but with a much lower price tag.

The total bill per pax is roughly $50+ and there were 6 of us that day (Of which 2 did not really eat the meat).
